At 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, at Schieffelin Hall, Doug Hocking, will speak on "The Butterfield Overland Mail Across Chiricahua Apache Country.” The Great Oxbow Route was the longest stagecoach mail route in history and the first transcontinental mail route for the United States. Its role in the finance of the country and in keeping California in the Union cannot be overstated. The Overland Mail faced very special challenges from terrain, natives, and lack of population in Chiricahua country.
Doug Hocking is an Spur Award, Will Rogers Medallion Award, and Co-Founder's award winning author of histories of the Southwest as well as being an award winning speaker.
There will be an optional no host pre-meeting dinner 5:30 at the Longhorn Restaurant on Allen Street. The public and guests are welcome.
